Ms. Devil & Ms. Angel - Week 20
When I pour out all my worries and how I was unable to overcome these worries that caused me sleepless night, I received a good piece of advice from my respected dad which I want to share with you. I have promised him that I will try to practice what he called 'switching the frame of mind'. The person by the name of 'Aiden' is actually my nephew who is just two and half years old, currently living with my parents. Aiden is my brother's son.
Based on his advice, I now understand that when I look at something that is blue in color, then I try to tell myself not to think that the color is blue, there is noway that I can do that. When my eyes see the color as blue, my mind will automatically send the message to my conscious mind that it is blue. This is the same thing that I am experiencing now. I am already 'worrying', then at the same time I try to tell myself not to worry, of course, it will not work. Let me share with you a simple way to make this work. It is called the switching of 'frame of mind'. Our moods, emotions, and everything else are controlled by our frame of mind at that point in time. The good thing is we have the ability to switch our frame of mind so that we could get the desired result. So if we were in the 'worrying' frame of mind, there is no point to tell the mind not to worry. The only effective way is to switch the frame of mind to something else other than the 'worrying' frame of mind.
1. I take out Aiden's photos and DVDs and totally immerse myself into the world of Aiden, interpreting the photos and try to recall the happy times that I had with Aiden, look at what he was doing and try to imagine what else he will be doing or capable of doing. In other word, use these photos and DVDs to switch my frame of mind. I need to totally immerse myself into the photos and the DVDs.
2. I put on the soft and soothing music. Totally immerse myself into the beautiful sound, the rhythms and the harmonies. Recollect my time when I was the happiest person, looking and focusing at the minute details of the events, the faces of the people around me, the settings, the environment, etc. I went into every minute details. When I did this, I effectively switched my frame of mind to that exact same moment, just like replaying the same event over my mind. The body reacted accordingly, secreting all the hormones, etc to make me feel happy just like I had felt before.
3. I put on the soft and soothing music. I went into the world of my baby. Imagine what she is doing now in my stomach; I talked to my baby in a motherly tone; then imagine the day when she is born; how I would want to carry her; how I would want to look at her; then imagine that she is with me in the house laughing or giggling when I show her some funny faces, etc. My imagination can actually go wild here as long as I keep focusing on my baby and the happy moment I would want to have with her.
So these are the basic principles to follow in switching our frame of mind. I am sure you can get it and you can practice it as well. There is no point telling your brain not to worry when you are in the 'worrying' frame of mind. You need to switch to 'happy' frame of mind by focusing on incidents or events that have made you happy before and recollecting every details of it to make the body react accordingly.door mirror
